Boyhood (2014)

If there were ever a movie for which the term “one-of-a-kind” applies this is it. So far as I can tell nothing like this has ever been seen before nor could it likely ever be replicated — the same actors playing the same characters in a storyline spanning a dozen years.

There are too many special moments here to begin to list, but one cinematic editing trick, in particular, stands out for me. Specifically, there are no fade-to-black shots or slides saying, like, “… a year later“. Rather, the calendar continuously moves forward and each segment just morphs into the next. At times it is jarring but ultimately keeps you riveted to the screen and the narrative.
