When Bad Things Happen to Good People by Harold Kushner

Harold Kushner

Harold Kushner is a rabbi from the Boston area who wrote this book after his young son died from progeria,  a rare and incurable congenital condition that causes early and irreversible signs of aging in a child. He found that although trained in a healing profession he was utterly unable to come to grips with the tragedy thrust upon him. This experience — and the opportunity to write about it — changed both his theology and his worldview, and he has gone on to share that journey with countless people around the world.

Personal connection

I have read this book at least 3 times as well as three of his later volumes, and I saw him speak in Minneapolis in 2012 (to listen to that speech click here). “When Good Things …” has been a great comfort to me in times of depression and uncertainty. I find it always strengthens my faith and clears my head around making the best of this life. After his speech in Minneapolis, I spoke with him briefly and he autographed copies of his most recent manuscripts, The Book of Job and Nine Essential Things I’ve Learned About Life.
