Because of those Sunday afternoon programs with \u201cLennie and the boys\u201d (they were all boys in those days) the first classical <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/LP_record\">LP (you remember those?)<\/a> my parents ever bought was Bernstein and the NY Phil performing Prokofiev\u2019s <em>Peter and the Wolf<\/em> and Tchaikovsky\u2019s <em>Nutcracker<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;3_5,2_5&#8243; module_class=&#8221;no-gap&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.3.2&#8243;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;3_5&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.3.2&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.3.2&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bernstein\u00a0was multi-talented and\u00a0wrote pieces for performers, ensembles, and venues of all kinds<\/strong> &#8212; art song and orchestra, Broadway and concert hall, settings of Hebrew psalms and the Roman Catholic mass (a piece for huge forces including a rock band). Oh, and he did all this while serving as music director for one of the world&#8217;s great orchestras. The oft-heard criticism\u00a0was that he was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2013\/10\/27\/240742186\/energetic-intimate-letters-reveal-private-leonard-bernstein\"> internally conflicted, that he spread himself too thin, and that he badly neglected his health<\/a>. In this video, we see<strong> Gustavo Dudamel with the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela<\/strong> &#8212; the group he conducted before his rise to the helm of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. <strong>This is not your average symphonic performance<\/strong> &#8212; watch how the players and the audience let it all hang out.
