Therefore it may seem unlikely how much I loved this detailed description of the summer events held in Rome in 1960.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In a book subtitled <em>The Olympics that Changed the World<\/em>\u00a0author David Maraniss makes a compelling case that the 1960 summer games were a kind of fault line between old and new.\u00a0That summer saw the seeds of much of what was to come later in later decades:<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; module_class=&#8221;no-gap&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.3.2&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;0px||||false|false&#8221;][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.3.2&#8243;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.3.2&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.3.2&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;||0px||false|false&#8221;]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cold War ideology<\/strong> started seriously overshadowing sportsmanship as both Moscow and Washington trumpeted their respective medal counts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Performance-enhancing substances<\/strong> made their way into the subtext when Danish cyclist Knud Jensen collapsed during his race under the influence of the drug Roniacol and died shortly thereafter (although the exact <a href=\"http:\/\/www.todayifoundout.com\/index.php\/2016\/08\/strange-story-first-person-disqualified-olympics-doping\/\">cause-and-effect relationship here <\/a>remains a matter of some debate).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Broadcast media <\/strong>exerted a greater-than-ever influence as these were the first Olympics to be widely televised.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.3.2&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>On this last point, Maraniss describes the monumental daily logistical challenges of the era in terms of filming the events on the ground in Rome, getting the film onto an airplane headed to New York, transporting the film to the network studio, and editing the film quickly enough for replay on American prime-time television.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; module_class=&#8221;no-gap&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.3.2&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;0px||||false|false&#8221;][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;3_5,2_5&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.3.2&#8243;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;3_5&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.3.2&#8243;][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/blog.oganovic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/US-1960-Olympic-athletes-Rafer-Johnson-Cassius-Clay-and-Wilma-Rudolph.jpg&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.3.2&#8243; box_shadow_style=&#8221;preset2&#8243;][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_5&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.3.2&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.3.2&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>Finally, from the purely American perspective, there was one additional subtext.
